I recently stayed at a charming guesthouse in Madalena, Azores called Calma Do Mar. My purpose was to hike on Pico Island and I stayed for five nights. The owner and staff were fantastic and went above and beyond to ensure my stay was enjoyable. Edna, who was there each morning, cooked us delicious eggs and homemade baking. The owner, Petra, was very welcoming and made sure to meet us. I loved the quiet location, just a short walk from the wild Atlantic and a popular restaurant. The wood stove in our room was a cozy touch, and the tourist information and hiking pamphlets were extremely helpful. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, with a good shower and firm beds. I appreciated the plug-in heater as well as the use of the fridge and kitchen for cooking. This eco-friendly establishment made recycling and composting easy.

Poor room lighting.

The hosts were incredibly welcoming and helpful, providing us with valuable local knowledge. Having access to a kitchen and living room was an added benefit, especially during the stormy weather. The breakfast spread was spectacular, with 9 different types of homemade marmalade. The on-site laundry service made our stay very enjoyable.
