We had a fantastic stay at a lovely lodge right on Surat Bay. Our room had stunning sea views and we could even spot sea lions from our window. The walk to the beach was conveniently labeled and just a short distance away. The hostel provided binoculars for penguin viewing and DVDs for entertainment. The staff were friendly and helpful, making our stay even more enjoyable.

The bunk beds in the dorm room were uncomfortable, with thin metal grids that caused sinking.

The location by the beach was amazing! I could even see sea lions from my bedroom window, which was a truly unique experience. the hosts were really nice and helpful, giving us great suggestions on what to do in the area. Plus, having a coffee caravan on site was a convenient touch. the secluded and quiet atmosphere made it the perfect base to explore the Catlins region.

The facilities could use some improvement. the rooms lacked storage space and there were no hooks to hang our clothes or towels.

I couldn't have asked for a better location. This place is situated right on the beach, with windows overlooking the bay on two sides. The view is absolutely breathtaking. The owners here are incredibly friendly and helpful, ensuring that I had a comfortable stay. The whole place is spotlessly clean, with individual touches that make it feel like a home away from home. The garden here is a lovely spot to relax, with seating that overlooks the bay and even some friendly chickens wandering around. I would definitely return to this venue if I find myself in the area again.

I had a wonderful time staying at this hostel right beside the beach where I could walk and see sea lions. The location was perfect for my trip and provided stunning views. The room was comfortable and had all the necessary facilities. The staff were friendly and made sure all my needs were met.

Some basic items like milk could have been stocked for sale, as the shops were quite far away.

I had such a wonderful time staying at Surat Bay Lodge By The Sea/Backpackers! The location was absolutely amazing, right next to the beach, and I even got to watch sea lions playing along the shore. The hostel was quiet and secluded, making it the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Catlins region. The bed in my room was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a great night's sleep. The kitchen was clean and tidy, and there was everything I needed to cook a delicious meal. Despite a couple of minor drawbacks, I highly recommend this hostel for anyone visiting the area. I had a fantastic experience and would definitely stay here again.

There was nothing I didn't like.

The location of this lodge is simply unbeatable, right by the beach. Being able to walk down to the ocean and see sea lions in the wild was such an amazing experience. The hotel facilities were also top-notch, with a well-furnished sitting room and sun room that were perfect for relaxing. The staff at the lodge were incredibly helpful and friendly, showing me local attractions and even lending me binoculars to spot penguins and sealions. the warm and homely atmosphere of this lodge made my stay truly memorable.

The value for money at this place was spot on, and the room was fantastic. The location was breathtaking, with a view to die for, and the staff treated us like family.

The only thing that could make the breakfast menu better would be adding some variety to the options.

Had a nice time during xmas at this backpacker hostel by the beach. Enjoyed the clean and well-equipped kitchen, and had some great walks along the beach and nearby spots. Location was great, with easy access to key attractions in the area. Really liked the friendly owners who offered tips and made sure we had a good time.

Some of the bunk beds were not very comfortable, and one was not very stable. Bedding also smelled musty.

We absolutely loved staying at Surat Bay Lodge by the Sea! The hostel's quirky and comfortable atmosphere, reminiscent of a typical kiwi bach, made us feel right at home. The location, situated in Surat Bay with a view of the river mouth and sea, was perfect for those wanting to be close to the beach. Jack's local knowledge was exceptional, and his suggestions allowed us to see loads of wildlife, including seals. Despite the stormy weather, our room was cosy and warm, providing us with the perfect retreat. The well-equipped and super quiet kitchen was a fantastic bonus. Highly recommended for a quiet weekend away!
